Drive-thru vaccine clinic coming to NE Calgary

Residents in Calgary will soon be able to get their vaccine shots through a drive-thru service.

CALGARY – Calgarians living in the city’s northeast quadrant will have another way of getting vaccinated, and it will be more convenient than ever.

Alberta’s first-ever drive-through vaccination clinic will be open for business as early as next week.

The province is still finalizing the details of exactly where the clinic will be with local communities.

Earlier this week, the Calgary Emergency Management Agency’s Chief Sue Henry said people living in those communities faced unique barriers in getting vaccinated, but that vaccination rates in the northeast were not due to a lack of interest.

Henry said appointments at the Genesis Centre — which serves those communities — have been fully booked.

“Everyone deserves their chance to get the vaccine, barrier-free,” said Anila Umar Lee Yeun with the Centre for Newcomers, in a release.

“Social services agencies, community groups, faith-based groups, AHS, and government have worked together tirelessly to ensure we work collaboratively, share information, identify opportunities to increase access to vaccination and help guide the community through the pandemic.”

The Genesis Centre and an AHS clinic at Northgate Village Mall are still offering COVID-19 shots and have administered over 71,000 shots since they opened in March.

The Genesis Centre clinic recently expanded from 10 to 40 vaccination stations to accommodate demand.

On top of that, there are 35 doctor’s offices and pharmacies offering shots in the northeast.
